Hotel Gotham, Manchester

Expert Review

Gotham is the latest creation of Bespoke Hotels. The Hotel opened in 2015 in mid-town Manchester, following a painstaking conversion of the former Midland Bank. The ‘King of King Street’ has been restored, reimagined and reclaimed for the city.

Top Secret

House champagne is also served at the Oscars and rarely found elsewhere. Theatricality is the order of the day; so don’t be afraid to ask the mixologists at Club Brass to assemble your signature snifter.

The Review

Taking up a temporary residence at Hotel Gotham is an invitation to take a starring role at the most extravagant party in town. The theme of idle-rich playboys and New York sweethearts is set up in a Fort Knox fairytale. The hotel itself is situated in a classical gem; the ‘King of King Street’- a looming piece of classical architecture that was the long-time home of the Midland Bank. The Hotel pays due homage to its past; Club Brass serves up some of the best views of the city, with a natty cocktail list and exclusive cuvée, from the inside of a banker’s vault. The roof terrace is a relaxed and secluded space to soak up some of the spectacular views on offer from this vantage point in town; surrounded by an eclectic mix of companionably classical and clean, contemporary structures. The roaring twenties run right through the hotel, and keep you roaring with them. Gotham is a fantastical and fun place to be.

60 imposing rooms are equipped with a range of products to enjoy at any time of the day or night…Enormous ceilings and opulent furnishings abound. Rooms are all splendidly finished in the fashions of the time, but with a respectful nod to the industrial proportions of their impressive location. The Banker’s Suites are complete with gold-clad rolltop baths, suggestively laid out in the middle of the room; whilst the Hotel’s premier residences, the ‘Inner Sanctum suites’ come complete with a small cinema screen, and do without any natural light to remind its guests of the world going on outside. Breakfast is taken in Honey; a hideaway near the top of the building where lower proportions create intimacy, and art-deco windows give glimpses out onto the wide King Street promenades below.  A leisurely affair, pin-striped staff deliver a range of customary favourites, with an emphasis on setting and service. Honey hosts dinner each evening, in a similarly laid back fashion- but with access to the Hotel’s impressive cellar, and the kitchen’s seasonal, and locally sourced creations.
