We Love

  • The care generously poured into the stay by owner Franz, taking time to get to know the guests and show them the best that the hotel and region has to offer.
  • The location couldn’t be better, nestled in the heart of the historic town of San Candido with jaw-dropping views of the three towering peaks of ‘Drei Zimmen’.
  • Food, food, glorious (and healthy) food. We recommend going for half-board at least to make the most of their fantastic restaurant, which offers meat, fish and vegetarian menus coupled with a buffet of local salad produce and a very respectable chees

Travel Info

• Bolzano airport (BZO) is closest (33 km by car) and a shuttle can be organised. However, you may find flights to Bolzano tricky as it’s not very well-connected. Venice (VCE, 175 km) is also an option. By train, aim for San Candido Station where the hotel will arrange for a complimentary shuttle service to the hotel.

Expert Review

Imagine back to a dark autumnal night in 1305 where a wandering merchant travel-weary eyes see the warm glow of the Orso Grigio inn by town square. It’s already been running for two years by this point and he’s heard good things of the beer. Back then, as now, the Orso Grigio doesn’t disappoint if you’re in search of timeless hospitality and good grub.

The Review

You would be hard-pressed to find your way to the Orso Grigio without staring up in awe at the numerous valleys and peaks of surrounding terrain. Arriving to notice the stunning Church of San Michele just a stone’s throw from the entrance, and in the same glance taking in the breathtaking views of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo or The Three Peaks of Lavaredo, you pat yourself on the back for choosing such a stellar location and head in.

The family tree painted on the wall and the joyful eyes of Franz and his daughter Verena, the 9th and 10th generation managers, welcoming you over the wine and canapés is a testament to how history can be part of the breathing life of the present day. Hallways and rooms are adorned with classic artefacts like typewriters, sewing machines and some very beautiful old wardrobes built to hold the finest gowns and dinner jackets. After a long trip, achy muscles will thank you for a trip to either the Finnish or Bio rooftop saunas, where you can breathe in the hay-infused dry air and gaze at clouds passing in the blue sky through the sauna windows onto the mountain. Candle-lit dinner is warm and hearty affair, with house (local wines and excellently prepared dishes. The food is rich to replenish energy spent hiking, but vegetables are aplenty and you can load up on extra sides from the buffet in addition to the 3-course menus. Don’t forget to leave room for artisanal bread and one of a host of oils and vinegars which did not disappoint.
