Top Secret

Ask to be shown the hotel’s “infernotto”. Meaning finest place in the local dialect, this exquisite underground vault is dug 17 metres down into the Monferrato rock and houses Guido’s enviable private collection of over 5000 Italian wines.

Origins

Although in existence since the late seventeenth century, the Tenuta Santa Caterina has only recently assumed its current form. In 2003, when Guido Carlo Alleva, a Milan lawyer with local roots, acquired the estate, he took over a dilapidated house and run down vineyard. The next ten years saw the painstaking refurbishment of both buildings and vine, which, through Guido and Giulia’s careful attention to both tradition and modernity, returned the estate to its former glory. The Relais was added in 2015 to welcome visitors into the world of the winery as relaxed house guests rather than day trippers.

The Review

People have been cultivating wine in the hills around the Relais di Tenuta Santa Caterina since the 5th century BC, and arriving at this luxurious boutique winery hotel one immediately feels part of this millennia old tradition.
Housed in a traditional Monferrato home from the seventeenth and eighteenth century, the Relais is perfectly in tune with its ancient surrounding landscapes while also offering tasteful and discrete Mediterranean luxury.
Following a stunning drive through the UNESCO-listed Monferrato hills, one arrives at the Relais and enters a world of tranquillity and tasteful elegance. On arrival, guests are shown to one of the six luxurious suites, each with unique décor and atmosphere and named for one of the winery’s vintages. For a taste of real luxury opt for Setecàpita (a delicious red in wine form), which comes replete with its own private spa.
The naming of the rooms is apt, since a stay at the Relais would not be complete without an immersion in the viticulture of this remarkable vineyard and winery, which has been brought lovingly back to life by its new owner Guido Carlo Alleva and his daughter, and property manager, Giulia.
Under the instruction of an expert guide, take a tour of the precisely cultivated vineyards which surround the Relais. Having worked up a thirst in the vines, relax into the cool cellar for a guided tasting of the wonderful wines.
Beyond wine, the hotel has an enviable location with the option of lovely, tranquil walks into the surrounding hills or swimming in the hilltop pool. For the more adventurous, there is the opportunity for golf, horse riding or quad biking. Be sure also to venture out into the surrounding countryside, where one can sample a true taste of Piedmont’s ancient culture and cooking away from the tourist trail.
